Ensjø subway station

The new Ensjø underground station represents a part of the ongoing transformation of Ensjø. Elegant materials have been used to give the station a visual identity that ties it in more closely with the stations of the city centre.

The client wanted hard-wearing materials that would also be available for years to come, and natural Norwegian stone was therefore chosen both for the platform surfaces and the station walls. It was a choice that also served the purposes of universal design: light granite was selected for the platform surface, while darker Otta Høgseter phyllite was chosen for the walls. The dark Otta phyllite was also used for safety strips on stairs and ramps.

On the walls, the Otta phyllite of different widths and thicknesses was installed in a regular pattern – something which created a better interplay between various wall installations such as advertising panels, signs, benches and technical installations. By dividing up the wall in this way, it was made at the same time less vulnerable to tagging, graffiti and postering.
